What is Holy Matrimony?
"Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church..." -Ephesians 5:25
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, "The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is ordered to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation and education of children. Christ the Lord raised marriage between the baptized to the dignity of a sacrament." (1660) This sacrament of Marriage sybolizes and makes present among us the love between Christ and his Church.
One man and one woman who desire to enter into this sacramental covenant together must know:
-Marriage is a unification of the two into one flesh; they become partners who desire above all else the holiness of themselves
and the other.
-Marriage is indissoluble; it cannot be broken or undone, as the Rite of Marriage says, "What God has joind together, let no man
put asunder."
-Each spouse must be faithful to the other, just as God is faithful to his covenant with the Church.
-Both must be open to life; their home becomes the place where the Church grows as they educate their children and pass on
the faith (the Domestic Church).
